Born on 13 July 2007 in Esplugues de Llobregat, Catalonia, Lamine Yamal grew up in Rocafonda, one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in Mataró. His father Mounir is from Equatorial Guinea and his mother Sheila from Morocco. Spotted at a local tournament, Barcelona signed him to La Masia at age 7. He rose through every youth category faster than any player in club history. At 15 years and 290 days he became the youngest player ever to appear for Barcelona in La Liga. At 16 he won Euro 2024 with Spain, scoring one of the great tournament goals in the semi-final against France, becoming the youngest scorer in European Championship history. He is widely considered the heir to Messi and Ronaldo as the dominant force in world football.
