Cleopatra VII is the most famous ruler in Egyptian history and one of the most iconic figures of the ancient world. She was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom, spoke nine languages, allied herself with both Julius Caesar and Mark Antony to preserve Egyptian independence, and was a highly intelligent political strategist in a world dominated by men. Some argue Ramesses II — who ruled for 66 years and built Abu Simbel — was the greatest Egyptian pharaoh. Others say Tutankhamun, Akhenaten or Thutmose III deserve the title. Was Cleopatra truly the greatest ruler of ancient Egypt?
